Hi Salma! Island of the Blue Dolphins sounds like a really interesting read. I love learning about the history of indigenous peoples on a whole, especially Native Americans. Karana’s story is heartbreaking. Especially, since the story is a historical fiction and is based on some aspects of someone’s real experiences. The fact that she was left on an island and had to cope with the death of her brother at such a young age is really sad. I could only imagine how scary it must have been for karana. Her story is amazing! And you did a great job explaining what the book is about. Definitely a read for me. Excellent job Salma!

Hello, Salma I thought your presentation was really good. I liked your connection to Karana on how you are both powerful women who have to be more independent in navigating challenges in new environments. Karana sounds like an extraordinary character, it’s pretty amazing that she is based on a real historic figure. The except that you choose describing the dog and how she gained some trust and felt more alive was powerful. Your reading really had me invested in wanting to know what was going to happen next, and how Karana was going to continue to survive in her circumstances. Overall, great job.

Thank you for sharing Salma! This sounded very interesting to hear about and your presentation was lovely. You were very clear and direct which is good for me because it was very easy to follow. The stories of the indigenous people are very important to learn about because it involves the preservation of culture.

Hey Salma, this text sound pretty interesting and I feel like I would get very emotional reading especially with the part of her brother, the only person she had being killed by wild dogs. Then the irony of her getting and keeping a wild dog as a pet. I feel like I would have been upset and resented all of them. I guess it shows the concept of being lonely and accepting anyone who loves and accept you and can keep you company. It also shows the strength of Karna. I do like the connection you made with being a first generation student and having to figure out things on your own. I hope it was not as hard, but I definitely understand and agree that it can be a lot of pressure.

I agree I am also a first generation student and I had A LOT of things that I had to figure out on my own and it made it extremely difficult at times. I loved your presentation and can also see myself relating to this story and would definly go and read it because it does seem like a bittersweet story.

Hi Salma, I enjoyed watching your presentation on Island of the Blue Dolphins. I am not familiar with this story but it’s definitely something that I will look into because I did find it pretty interesting. The book being published in 1960 but the main character being a native American really got my attention. I can see that this character went through a lot throughout the story and seeing how some of the things she experienced is kind of based on a true event really made me feel upset. Overall You did a great job presenting the story to us and based on the comments, I see that you made some of us wanna check out this book.

And just to add on, I really like how you connected it to your life being a first generation student/household. It goes to say that this book tries to bring people who are like Karana a source of hope and empowerment and I think that’s amazing.

It was impressive how you spoke from your mind and didn’t look at your notes when giving your introduction to the book! Also I loved how much you went into depth on the characters and their motivations and actions. The way you presented the excerpt made me really want to learn more about the book. You spoke so confidently and kept my attention the whole time. Amazing work Salma!
