Peter Pan

The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up

Peter Pan comes from the later part of the Golden Age of Children’s Literature. Like Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland the eventual literary tale emerged from stories told to children in the author’s life.

All Children, Except one grow up... quote by J.M. Barrie

The Scottish writer J.M. Barrie created the character of Peter Pan and the story of Peter and Wendy Darling. Though the character first appeared in chapters from The Little White Bird (1902) and was subsequently published as “Peter Pan in Kensington Garden”(1906), it was in Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan, Or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, that the character and story fully took place.

The play premiered in London and was such a big hit that a year later, it also opened in New York. This was quickly followed by many films, musicals, and adaptations of the play.

Barrie continually tinkered with the play’s text, the character of Peter, and the overall story over the years, subsequently publishing the novel version of Peter and Wendy, now generally known as Peter Pan, in 1911.

The script of the play was eventually published in 1928.

In this module, we will be looking at the original Barrie text of the play and novel and will explore various interpretations of this story and character and consider how this story, like Alice in Wonderland, became a staple of children’s literature and popular culture.

I recall seeing Peter Pan in literature from and on Television. Which one I saw first, I do not recall. The only thing I remember about Peter Pan is a boy, fairy or pixie (I think), other children, a ship, and a pirate. I could be getting some of my fairy tales mixed up, but when I hear the name Peter Pan, those are what comes to mind.

I have encountered Peter Pan in books, movies, and plays. The story is about a boy who never grows up and lives in Neverland with the Lost Boys. He takes Wendy, John, and Michael on an adventure, where they meet Tinker Bell, Captain Hook, and other magical characters. I remember Peter being brave and playful, Hook being the villain, and Tinker Bell being a tiny but strong fairy. The story is about adventure, friendship, and the idea of staying young at heart

I have only encountered Peter Pan in the 2003 movie. I remember that it is about a boy who never grows up and he takes other children to Neverland. This is my main knowledge of the story.

I’ve only known that Peter Pan correlated to Tinker Bell and Wendy but I never knew the whole story. But I’ve encountered Peter Pan in a T.V show called Once Upon a Time. The show puts twists into these classic fairytales. So in the show, Peter Pan was Rumplestiltskin’s father.

That version of Peter Pan is a really interesting one. It dips into some of the darker elements of Peter Pan’s character. Did you like the show?

I recall seeing clips of the Disney Peter Pan movie however I was never really interested in it. I’ve learned about Peter Pan syndrome where adults believe they are young forever and therefore act like it, typically have naive mindsets. I’ve also heard theories of him actually being a spirit leading other children to their deaths to join him

I’ve encountered Peter Pan in the Disney animated movie. I remember Peter as a boy who never grows up, Wendy and her brothers flying to Neverland, Captain Hook as the villain, and Tinker Bell as Peter’s fairy companion. The story is about adventure, imagination, and the magic of childhood.

I don’t think I’ve watched the entire Peter Pan animated film – unless I was very young. I think Tinker Bell has something to do with the story as well… and they try to go to Neverland? Wendy is a human girl. That’s what I know right now.

I don’t remember watching Peter Pan to its entirety. I do know about the Neverland and I associate him with Tinkerbell. I do also know about a song about his story called “ Lost boy” by Ruth B and I think she told his story.

I have encountered Peter Pan through both the Disney version of Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. From what I remember, the story was about Peter Pan, who had magical powers and would bring little boys and girls to a place called Neverland, where there were no adults and the kids would never get older.

I have never watched the Peter Pan movie but I do remember first seeing Peter Pan was when I went to Disney world. This was a while back when they used to have a lot of the old school characters. I always told myself that I was going to watch the movie but I never made time to come around to do so. I was even going to watch the newest version which was the live action film but to me personally when I saw the trailer I felt that one looked corny.

I remember loving Peter Pan growing up. I haven’t seen it in years, so I don’t remember much of the plot. I’m excited to revisit it today!

I dont recall ever reading this book in school, but just last year when i was doing fieldwork in a 3rd grade class, i saw that this book was assigned to them. I was not familiar with the story, so i decided to watch the disney movie. Its about a boy named peter pan that takes children to the neverland. Wendy and her brothers go on adventures, which adults never believed, but returned with some abandoned children who never had a mother figure.

I remember when I was a child watching the Disney Peter Pan movie. I remember him being a fairy type of being that visits various children as they were sleeping and bring them to Neverland. This was a place where kids always stayed kids and never turned to adults. Later in life I read a lot of theories on the internet of this movie having a much darker meaning of Peter Pan visiting children that died and taking them to heaven.

I remember watching the Disney version of Peter Pan when I was younger, but I don’t think I ever fully understood the story back then. What stuck with me most was the idea of Neverland.

I encountered Peter Pan in the live-action film as well as in the “Once Upon A Time” series. I remember that Peter was a boy who never wanted to grow up, and he had a family of “lost boys” that he led in the movie. I also remember his enemy was Captain Hook. And if I remember correctly, Captain Hook didn’t like Peter because he wanted to be a kid again.

I’ve come across Peter Pan mostly through Disney movies and children’s books. What sticks out to me is the idea of never growing up and escaping to a world where anything is possible. I remember the scenes with Wendy and her brothers flying off to Neverland and Peter’s confidence and playful nature. The story made me think about how childhood is seen as this magical time people want to hold onto. It also made me realize how stories like Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland both pull from real emotions and curiosity about growing up, identity, and freedom, just in very different ways.
