Memetic Tales

Fairy Tales as Memes

What you have probably seen over these last few weeks is how much fairy tales are in our popular imagination.

Fairy tales continue to circulate all around us today, some more than others. As we’ve discussed, most people know them based on their illustrations, on Disney-created material, etc. But they are also used to comment on the world around us.

You’ve probably encountered a fairy tale meme online before. And you probably have a definition for what a meme is (more or less…)

Find or Create a meme of your choice online and add it to the following fairy tale meme slide show. (Open in Editor to do so)

I’m pretty sure I did come across fairy tale memes at some point, but I cannot say that I paid attention to them. For me, a meme is usually an image, text, or theme of some sort that is usually funny. The one I chose is on of Cinderella.

I find the fairytale memes very funny at times, especially when I see them online and I can send in the group chats with my friends. I love when they make the princesses’s face funny and goofy. I chose the ones with Tangled and Cinderella. These memes have relevance to our society as we utilize social media to communicate and can be the route to most relationships, but for women it can be a scary platform for creeps and we need to make sure that we stay protected on their as well. In addition social media is used for expression and a lot of people will use posts to shade or send out messages whether direct/indirect. People will ask them about it and at times someone will say no, but in reality it is yes because the “ shoe fits” or the post was relevant enough for them to feel like it was towards them.

My two favorite memes that I included on my slide were memes of Snow White and of the Evil Queen. The one of Snow White is definitely one of my favorites because it uses the saying that my life is a fairytale but with the twist of it being the German version. This is so funny to me because, as we discussed in class, the German versions of fairytales do not have happy endings and are usually very torutous for the characters. Additionally, the one of the Evil Queen was one of my favorites as well because it takes a modern-day spin on the “mirror on the wall,” which I thought was funny because it is as if the Evil Queen has now entered our day in age.

Update: I saw that one of the memes I chose was a sample so we can just focus on the other two I chose. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I choose that meme because unlike the other characters Mulan didn’t go after a man. I feel like that was the first princess story where they didn’t make the character chase after a man or have her fall in love with a man.

What once felt magical now feels a little too real. Just like college life, things that seemed fun or simple at first start showing their stressful and overwhelming sides. It’s a reminder that growing up comes with unexpected twists, challenges, and lessons that no one really prepared us for.
